Rare Cast Bronze Agricultural Trophy by the famous French Sculptor Auguste Nicolas Cain and Christofle Circa 1887. Silver-plated bronze dish decorated with highly detailed 3D relief of a young provincial farm girl feeding her animals.

Diameter 36 cm / 14, weight 3,5 kg. It is in excellent overall condition.

Condition for its age, Good solid antique condition, plating is still bright, some very minor rubs, marks and signs of age of as per the clear pictures. You will receive the item pictured, so the pictures are integral to the condition report and listing. Hand Engraved on the border in French.

Ministere De L'agriculture Concours Regional Agricole De Melun 1887 Prix D'Ensemble Animaux De Basse-Cour' Which translates to English as' The Ministry of Agriculture. Regional Agricole De Melun, 1887 Group Prize for Farm Animals. A rare item, produced specifically for the Agricultural Show - not a mass produced Christofle piece. Cain's sculptures achieve high prices. The sale is for the bronze silver plated plate shown only - the bottle of wine and lion sculpture are shown for scale and reference purposes only.

Caïn was born in Paris, and studied under Rude, Guionnet, and Pierre-Jules Mêne (whose daughter he married in 1852). His first exhibit in the Salon of 1846 was a wax model of a linnet defending her nest from a rat, later cast in bronze and shown at the 1855 Salon. From 1868 onwards he concentrated on monuments, including the Chiens de meute at the Château de Chantilly, Le Lion de Nubie et sa proie in the Jardin du Luxembourg, and Tigress and Peacock in the Gardens of the Tuileries.
