A superb quality French bronze gilt mantel clock adorned with classical female figure wearing a dress and laurel wreath halo writing in a book draped over a white carrara marble rectangular shaped base with bow ends. The base is embellished with foliate rosettes and laurel leaf moulding and stands on decorative feet. The clock has a white enamel dial with Roman numerals and the makers name- Leroy & Fils Palais Royal 114 &115 The movement is a French eight day duration which strikes the hours and half hours on a bell with outside count wheel. The movement back plate is also stamped with the makers name. Leroy et Fils was founded in 1785 by Basile Charles Leroy.
The company became the clockmakers to Napoleon I, Princess Pauline and the Duke of Bourbon. They had retail outlets in both Paris and London and under Queen Victoria they were the only foreign clock makers that had the British royal warrant.
