Antique Victorian French Marquetry Picture Frame With Cherubs Griffins Doves
This is an absolutely stunning little easel style picture frame. It is decorated with fine inlaid wood shapes, a technique called marquetry. The frame is likely French in origin. The inlaid or marquetry work includes highly detailed Cherubs holding chalice like vessels from which it appears they are feeding the doves. As you eye moves lower on the frame, scrolling and vining decoration flows into a pair of Griffin like creatures each holding a cornucopia.
The fine details in the wings of the cherubs, and the doves are carefully drawn in with ink. The outer border of the frame is decorated in very tiny mosaic pieces with an overall cross pattern. The back side of the the frame appears to be of a dense highly figured wood, as does the pivoting easel stand. There are four tiny pivoting brass devices to hold your photo or artwork in place.
The overall dimension of the frame are 5 1/2" tall and 5 1/4" wide. The opening will hold a 2 1/2 diameter photo or artwork.
The marquetry is all in very nice condition. There are two areas of loss on the lower outside border of the frame and another across the outside of the upper border of the frame.
