Antique Victorian Rosary French 18k Gold Garnets Crucifix Cross Madonna (7009)

Antique Victorian Napoleon III Rosary with cross crucifix and madonna medallion. Made in France, circa 1880 and dated 1901.

Measurements: Weight is 16.0 grams. Length, partially doubled over is 12 1/4 inches (31cm).

Description : Stations composed of beautiful, deep red, round garnet beads alternating with small gold links. Lead to a small round medallion with a portrait of the Virgin Mary on one side and embossed initials on the back. A single line of garnets and gold links lead to a Cross/Crucifix pendant. The Cross is quite austere and geometric in form, but the figure of Jesus is beautifully and richly modelled with fine detail, from his anatomy to his hair. The back of the cross has been engraved AD 19 May 1901, which was a significant date for a previous owner, but probably added some time after the rosary was actually made.

Many people keep a rosary, such as this one in a pouch or bag. While they are praying, they remove it from the bag and often wind it around their wrist / arm in order to count the beads. This kind of rosary is not meant to be worn around the neck and there is therefore no clasp/opening. Combination of the deep red and gold is visually very beautiful. Quality of Corpus and workmanship is very good.

Marks and Metal: Many of the gold loops that form the chain between the garnets are hallmarked with the French eagle for 18k gold - very tiny. The loops connecting both the medallion with the Madonna and the Cross have the eagle mark as well as lozenge mark for the maker (worn and not legible).
